Paint clouds easily with Gradient Maps
Переглядів 34 тис.5 років тому
It takes a small amount of setup, but gradient maps make painting clouds a lot easier and opens you up to focusing completely on shapes and value. It applies color mapping automatically, so no weird values or colors can sneak their way in and you end up with a consistent, clean look. even with ai doing all the work for him, his style is still so incredibly bland, it's frustrating. there's nothing interesting or innovative to look at in his actual drawings, maybe this is why he genuinely seems to think his ai art looks good.

    Wanted to make an image but you don't have the skills to draw it yourself? We already had a tool for that, it's called comissioning real artists. AI bros keep talking about how "revolutionary" AI art is, but the only thing it revolutionises is the ability to steal someone's job. Also my dude fix the fucking lighting. You touched up every single detail of that picture except the lighting, which is the first thing you should fix.

  • @IamGrimalkin

    To be honest your video does not tell me there is no skill in AI art, it tells me Shad is not terribly skilled at AI art. I would imagine someone actually skilled could fix all the problems you mentioned. To be honest I think if Shad wanted to get actually skilled at AI art he might want to try something that conventional artists do: paint pictures from reality. Not using a photograph of reality as a prompt in this case, but editing prompts and using photoshop until it begins to resemble a real life landscape or whatever in front of him. That would teach him how lighting and form and such actually works.

    "You don't need to be afraid", the original video title says. As if using AI in your art somehow makes you more competitive. If you spend hours making art for a client, with or without AI, they WILL replace you with someone who just prompts AI and goes with the first option. Quantity over quality.

    I also don't enjoy drawing. A lot of time I hate it. And I don't like what I create either. And yet I refuse to touch AI, take other people's work, or lie. What I need to do is to go back to when I was a child and loved drawing. I need to rekindle the spark and fall in love with art again.

    it's always so rough when someone boasts about something they're terrible at. i don't think the guy's non-AI art is actually that bad, just very stylized and definitely needs some polishing, but it IS fine. but when he said specifically that what he's good at is anatomy, i just... dude. you HAVE to know, right?

    "i gave the ai a little more freedom to push it towards the results that i want" girl that's... that's the opposite of freedom, no? you gave the AI freedom to do something someone else wanted of it? what? i'm tempted to believe that what he's trying to say is that he had to give the AI a little freedom in order for it to come out looking good, but like. this was in reference to giving the AI better images of hands to work with. what, was its brain space freed up by not having to worry about hand shapes? was it "free" to, like, imagine things? what the hell is this guy on about

    I think Shad's video would be harmless to a degree if he prefaced the video as a tutorial on how to get ai to generate exactly what you want. In that case, we would see that there is more effort than just clicking a button when wanting a very specific image but it's all for personal use or fun. It's for that quick gratification for any non artist to see an image exactly how they want it without trying to draw it and it inevitably looking like shit. If this was shown as that, it wouldn't be much of an issue but to claim his art is of a professional level and he's created a piece with his unique artistic expression is bizarre and completely wrong.

    Human egos are experts at inflating themselves, but ultimately, as much as you may want someone to believe you are amazing at something, if you aren't as good as you claim to be you will always know. You may be able to lie or twist the truth in a way that others are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you cannot lie to yourself and actually believe it. As your inner critic that is always ready to call you out on your bullshit will always do so. Let's see him take the same prompts he is providing to the AI, and then try to create the art himself using traditional media such as paper/canvas and paints/pencils/markers, etc. The results would show us something that is on par with the examples he has shown of what he has drawn, and nothing close to the AI results. The claim that he just doesn't want to do the 'work', well, that's actually true. He's not a skilled artist because developing skill takes time commitment and work, which he's already communicated that it's not fun for him to invest that time and work, so he's asking the AI to do it for him. Believing you are a great artist because you can tell AI to create art for you makes about as much sense as believing you're a great cook because you can tell Grubhub to deliver you dinner. The only thing he's improved is his ability to direct the technology, not his ability to create art as an artist. He could be hiring out his prompts on fiver and get better results but he's probably too cheap for that and obviously couldn't take credit for being the creator, which is what he really wants here: ego fuel that he can use to tell others how great he is.

    Shad really isn't a bad artist. He really nails that old cheap comic book aesthetic. It's hardly realistic, but the extreme proportions could really sell a character with more practice on character designs. That, combined with his historical knowledge lends to a better sense of grounding that related styles don't utilize. If he practiced instead of just slapping AI everywhere, he wouldn't be bad. He could even make a comic out of his book, which is also not bad. My point is, while he's not what i would call talented, he's definitely good when he applies himself. And good is fine. I like lots of good, not great artists and can appreciate them, and we all know those same people can be successful. And if he did it for fun, well that's fine too. You don't need to take art seriously.

    I defended (and still some part of me reluctantly does) AI art for a time because i liked how it has the potential create fascinating miasmas of imagery that a person cant draw. At its most incoherent i think it can be kind of beautiful, almost dreamlike. His badly lit and posed (and slightly creepy) supergirl wife fanart isnt ever good, but the amount of effort he puts into it actually makes it worse, as he takes away every little weird thing that potentially gives it some character in order to create an uncanny valley impersonation of "real" art. The final result hits the uncanny valley, like a machine wearing very badly fitting human skin. Just awful. Also using his wifes face is a little creepy

You do not ink every line, you do not put intention into every decision. You are not an artist, you are little more than someone commissioning an image. I only hope you can choose to use those ideas as motivation to become a real, genuine artist rather than this alternative.

  • @Jefstito
    @Jefstito 3 дні тому

    Here’s my two cents as someone that’s using AI to produce something that in no way I’d able to produce without it. A truly skill artist will always be better than AI and the great thing about it is that AI can maximize any skill artist to do things that right now are impossible/impractical/way too expensive. Instead of fighting it, you should learn to use it and take it to the next level. AI its really just a “hack exposer”. If AI can replace you, then you aren’t as good as you think you are (I work in content strategies and AI its still light years away from truly capable writers). Another thing is that AI is not “stealing”. The way an AI its trained its by teaching it pattern recognition. Its no different than someone learning from looking at comics, animations, paintings, etc. It just does it exponentially faster than any human; but the process its actually not that different from thinking. Im saying that because, if you see how AI truly works, there’s absolutely no way copyright will EVER affect AI generation unless its literally building an using an already stablished character. Just look at all the generic hot guy in anime. They are all virtually the same and there’s no copyright infringement because the characters are not technically the same. Im saying this so you true artists dont kid yourselfs thinking this will go away. It wont. This a revolution thats as savage as many other technological revolutions. You guys really need to start learning how it works and be one step ahead or you’ll be left behind. I would love NOTHING MORE than have the book Ive work for 14 years (that won a Watty in 2019) to be fully illustrated by talented artist, but I cant pay you and there’s also a problem with waiting 5 business day to get one frame. AI does it badly, but it does it cheaper and faster. You can go ahead and think that this is something that big companies want to maximize profit, but the reality is that AI is more helpful for the smallest creators, not the big companies. You guys are out of reach for the majority of the customer base and AI can help you change that. Charge more for 100% human work, and charge less for 50% human work. You’ll have to get creative, but thats the way forward whether you line it or not

    • @gagi121
      @gagi121 День тому

      Not with that attitude, no. But I'm certain you would be surprised, what you would be capable of, with enough determination. You don't produce with AI generators, the output is an outsourced product. It's a request. I'm honestly always baffled when people, who first concede they have no experience with a medium, then start berating the community of that medium how they could do their job better. You are not there (yet) to understand how little utility this output has for a person that is actually seeks to create. It's an outsourced product coming from slot machine consisting of X amount of artists decisions. If you just wave those trough, people will inevitably notice that you don't give a shit. "You guys really need to start learning how it works and be one step ahead or you’ll be left behind." ......yeah..... you too.... Perhaps it's wise to not listen to the words of a completely moronic cult and actually start looking for the truth. Your assessment could not be further from it. If you choose to use generalized slop for your book, you put so much effort into, it will make you look cheap and like you don't give a shit, no matter the award. I don't understand why you would want to have a "badly done, but cheaper and faster" product attached to your life's work, but go ahead if you want to be associated with frauds and bots.

    • @Jefstito
      @Jefstito День тому

      @@gagi121 Sorry if I'm came off as offensive. I wasn't trying to tell artist what to do or not do, just how it looks from the outside looking in. I will say that it's not fair to think that the problem is my "attitude"... I'm 31 years old and I've spend most of my life becoming good at writing, which is a discipline that demands as much study and practice as drawing. And I'm not as naive as to pretend I could become good enough at drawing in a couple of years to compensate for not investing most of my life in this skill like true artists have done. Not only that, but it's not like I mastered writing yet (my book won the Wattys in 2019 and a bunch of other awards, but that's it; since it doesn't have s*x scenes and I suck at promotion, the book has very little reach). I still need to spend time improving my craft. Don't really have time or the skill to do everything. It's just not fair to place that burden on me or any other that uses AI art. And you are being insanely unreasonable at criticizing the "badly, but cheaper and faster" comment. You are acting like I'm taking the easy way out, when there's literally no other option. I CAN'T PAY AN ARTIST to do it. So for years I did what most people like me have done... spend money sparingly to produce small things, and slowly deal with the fact it will probably never get done. (The song in the trailer I'm about to release cost 500 DOLLARS to produce it with a person. He did an amazing job, but I can't spend 500 bucks for the whole bunch of OSTs my audiobook needs). And look, I'm not going to pretend I'm making art or anything like it, but this is certainly something that requires effort and time that I'm sure my followers will appreciate. I've done three chapters already and each of them took me about 19 hours of work between getting the f*cking AI to do something close to what I wanted and editing everything. That's a LOT of time for someone that already has a family, a company to run and that still needs to write the sequel of the book itself. And remember its not just the drawing, its the music and the voice acting (AI only helps you swap the voices, but the actual acting has to be done by you and it's surely a skill; my cousing is helping me since he actually has voice acting training). And I don't follow the AI cult, I don't get why you even felt the need to say that. I've just used the technology in my company because it's insanely useful; and by using it I know a lot about what it can and cannot do, and what it will most likely be able to do in the future. This technology is terrifying, and you TRULY only have the option of letting it swallow you or implementing it in your work to get ahead. Believe me, if you actually did your homework and learn about the technology, you would realize that you don't need to be a cultist or a fanatic to understand this. For the record, I don't love AI or anything like it. I'm convinced this could lead to the downfall of humanity if we are not smart about it (it's something like the nuclear bomb but maybe even worse). All the more reason to learn how to use it (because it's retarded to pretend people will just stop using it as if it never existed) and become prominent with it.

    • @Jefstito
      @Jefstito День тому

      Also, you could think HOW YOU COULD USE IT. You are an artist, right? Don't you have projects that you wanted to do and never could because you don't have the skills? Like making a videogame or a movie? AI can help you get started, and then you can move on to bigger things and start hiring artists and giving them work. Something that requires a team of 20 people and three years of development, now it might be done by 6 people in 6 months. You are thinking like "oh, big companies just want to spend less", but who gives a shit about companies? That means that YOU can now, instead of having to raise a million dollars for your idea, can now maybe produce it with only 100K. This technology makes you and me STRONGER and more likely to create our own art that doesn't need to be tied to ANYONE but us. Big producers like Disney are scared of the first little guy that manages to create a triple A product that opens this door to everyone. This doesn't have to be a doom device, but a new way of doing things.

    Im terrible at drawing and Ive been spending months working with AI images to create a sort of illustrated audiobook for my novel, and I cannot tell you how frustrated I am with AI. Creating consistent characters is a nightmare and 9/10 times the AI just doesnt follow your instructionsc getting to portray the correct emotion to characters and poses its pretty much impossible, and you could spend hours or minutes depending on how lucky you get. There’s no skill involved, just patience (and I use like 5 different tools to develop this). I really hope one day I can get real artists to help me. The cool thing is that I am at least able to do something somewhat decent, whereas before I could not. Also, I must say I went to Fiverr to hire someone to help me with the design of the characters (thats already described in the book) and artists wanted to charge me 100 bucks for EACH DESIGN. Im not saying they were dicks for charging me that not that they should cheapen their labor, but thats way too much money for someone like me, which is why Im turning to AI.

      I want to be very very very clear; 1. Generative AI has a lot of very serious ethical problems that are damaging to the art community (we live under capitalism) 2. Generative AI is not, never will, and will always rely upon, the skills, imagination, training, and production of "real" artists. AI directors and model programmers need to be respectful of that fact. 3. Bad art is still art. Bad people can be artists.
